Three Tips For Controlling Ticks This Fall

Posted on: 4 October 2017

With the fall season arriving, many people rejoice in the fact that it means the annoying pests from the summer season are going away. This includes fleas, mosquitoes, cicadas, and more. However, this does not include ticks. In fact, ticks remain heavily active during this time of year, so it's important to consider these three tips for avoiding possible contact with ticks this fall:

  1. Keep the Grass Cut Short: Keeping the grass cut short during the fall is extremely important as it deprives ticks of a place to live. This is because ticks like to sit on the tips of the blades of grass awaiting a host and then crawling down the blade when they need water. It's a great place for them to thrive while awaiting a host to walk by. So be sure that you don't allow lawn maintenance to dwindle now that cold weather is starting to arrive. Otherwise, you could have a problem with ticks, especially if you have pets of children in the home.
  2. Rake the Leaves: Leaves also provide a good home for ticks because they retain moisture. Ticks enjoy hiding here awaiting a host, as well. For this reason, it's important to rake the leaves on your property vigilantly. Also, since ticks like to live here, be sure that you are protecting yourself when you rake the leaves. You want to wear gloves, long sleeves, pants, and closed toe shoes. This way, you don't become a tick's next host.
  3. Use a Tick Spray: Once your lawn is cut short and the leaves are raked up, you will want to spray your yard with tick spray. This is going to help keep the ticks away for longer so that your yard can continue to be enjoyed by your family until the extremely cold winter weather arrives. Besides, this tick spray can even last up until the spring to ensure that ticks don't come gathering here once the snow clears up.

If you find that you do have a problem with ticks, hire professionals. Professionals can help clear up your yard even more with more controlled methods if you find that the above methods aren't helping. This is especially important if you have a large yard, which makes it a bit more difficult to control and if you have pets or kids who like to explore the yard. You definitely don't want to keep them from doing this just because of ticks, so be vigilant in keeping them out by hiring professionals for tick control when it's necessary.
